This $72B Market Is Headed to $160B by 2030

By: March 16, 2023

Satellite communications is becoming a very lucrative space (pardon the pun). We hear on a near weekly basis that SpaceX is launching more of its Starlike satellites to build a global communications network around the Earth, and the fact is, it’s not the only company doing it.

ViaSat (VSAT) is also building out a global mobile network. So are Amazon (AMZN), Telesat (TSAT), and OneWeb.

This doesn’t even take into account the comms sats that are in orbit for various governments, companies, organizations, and militaries.

Space Race Growth

What’s more, as Space Race 2.0 continues to grow, there will be more private sector companies building niche launch vehicles to get certain payloads into orbit. It will be cheaper and easier to open up space to a literal world wide web of communications.

As all that equipment is deployed, it will also be necessary to do other things in space, like clean up the junk that’s no longer in use.

The photo above is only of the tools that are under consideration for cleaning up the orbits of decades of debris. There are nets, lasers, and just about any other tool you can imagine in the works.

There are security concerns that go along with this. For example, what happens if a US removal sat takes a fully functional Chinese sat out of orbit? Or vice versa? That could get very messy.

This also brings up another growing sector – traffic cops. There are agencies for most governments that map everything up there and clear launch times for new flights, so they don’t run into any existing objects up there, but who gets priority to launch when India, Japan, China, Europe, and the US are waiting in line?

There will need to be international protocols built out simply for logistics as these technologies expand. One company that launched in 2013 but is now getting a bit more traction as space has become more compelling again is Intuitive Machines (LUNR), which specializes in orbital services, as well as lunar data services.

Companies Large and Small

Of course, while there are numerous small companies entering this exciting sector, the fact is, there are also a number of quality, large cap defense and aerospace companies that will certainly be a part of any US-driven space program.

Aerojet Rocketdyne (AJRD) is one of the top rocket engine makers in the world. It was almost purchased by Lockheed Martin (LMT), but the deal couldn’t get past regulators.

In December, L3Harris (LHX) put in a nearly $5 billion bid that may well get past regulators. LHX also just won a $765M bid for three new satellites for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which each measure various materials and environments around the globe.

The engines above are used on NASA’s massive new SLS rocket that’s part of the ambitious Artemis program to get back to the moon to create a base and go deeper into our solar system.

The bottom line is, there are amazing opportunities that are just underway. Just as having a phone that’s more powerful than most computers 15 years ago, so will space seem less a distant goal and a more integrated part of our lives.
